Tuesday 20th October

Good afternoon everyone,

Our book this week is the beautifully illustrated “Handa’s Surprise” by Eileen Browne. In this lovely story a delightful surprise unfolds when a little girl called Handa puts seven delicious fruits in a basket to take to her friend.

This book is a modern classic, Handa, who is part of the Luo tribe in south-west Kenya, decides to take seven pieces of delicious fruit to her friend, Akeyo, who lives in the neighbouring village. But as Handa wonders, I wonder what fruit Akeyo will like best? A series of sneaky animals steal something from Handa's basket, which she's carrying on her head... When Handa reaches Akeyo, will she have anything left to offer her friend?

You can listen to the story with your child by clicking on the link below.

Today children explored all the delicious fruits in the story and then acted it out in the garden with Salma. Children disguised with masks took on the roles of the sneaky animals stealing fruit from the basket.

Indoors children were re-telling the story and adding their own words and illustrations. A lot of our teaching is done through narrative, we are a book loving nursery. If children love books and stories they will want to read and of course reading fluently is the key to academic success.

Don’t forget the children finish for the half-term break on Thursday, Friday is a staff training day.

Have a lovely evening.
