Children's House Nursery School opened on 24 October 1923.
The founders, Doris and Muriel Lester worked tirelessly as social reformers, pacifists and non-conformists.
It was Doris' dream to build a school for the children of Bow, based on Maria Montessori's pedagogy. "Nothing is too good for the children of Bow!" said Doris Lester of the community.
The first stone was laid in a ceremony on 11 April 1923 and the school was opened later that year by writer, HG Wells.
The current Children's House community remain so proud of our school. Marking our 100th year, we looked at photographs and documents that have been preserved and handed down and a few tears have been shed just recognising the long history this fantastic school has had on the community.
We would love to hear from previous pupils, families, staff and members of the community: we are currently collating memories, thoughts and photographs.
In Summer 2025 we gathered all the wonderful historical documentation that we had at Children's House, some of which dated back to 1925. We invited Richard Wiltshire from Tower Hamlets Archives to come and help select pieces to be transferred across for safekeeping in the archives at Bancroft Road. Photographs, school records, children's work and historic and pedagogical policies as well as the founder's parchment were safely transported to be stored securely. The documents will be available for viewing in time and generations to come will know the impact our school has had on communities in Bow and beyond.
Also enjoy our blog which documents our wonderful Centenary Party on 29 June 2024 by clicking here.
In the meantime, please enjoy the incredible photographs and articles, some of which date back 100 years.
What has struck our wonderful team working here now, is our principles are still the same as Doris and Muriel back in 1923 and we are so grateful to them for their vision.
